Comments on the Guelph Symposium Cafe Restaurant Venue
This was the first time that we booked our lunch at a different venue after many enjoyable years at the Aberfoyle Inn. It was a bit of an experiment and we thank those individuals who gave us some feedback.
The location seemed to be as easy to drive to as Aberfoyle. There was lots of parking along with a level entry to the restaurant. Clean, well equipped washrooms were close by on the same floor. The extensive menu provided many options to choose from and the quality and quantity of the food was very good.
Another first was as people arrived they were assigned a number which they told our waiter when they wanted to order drinks or food. From all reports, the number system worked very well and allowed everyone to move around the room, still get what they ordered and receive the correct check. (Not too bad considering we are getting really old and forgetful!)
When we made the reservation for May 15/24 at the Symposium Restaurant, we tried to book the two rooms so the ladies could have one room and the guys would have the second room. Similar to our experiences at Aberfoyle. The manager would not agree to our request probably because this was our first time and he did not know us.
Once all 30 people arrived and we were spilling out into the main restaurant, the manager opened up the second room and many of the guys moved over. Problem solved and the manager agreed that we will have access to both rooms for our next lunch.
There was a delay in the taking of food orders mainly because the waiter was waiting for direction to start. This will be better coordinated next time.
As it turns out, the kitchen is only capable of preparing 5 meals at one time. Knowing this, we will work with the Symposium staff to streamline the process for our next lunch.

Chem Eng 70 Scholarship Update
Bob Taylor presented an update on our scholarship fund which is as follows:
The endowment principal is now at $65,249.22 which at 3% gives $1,957.48. There is a small carry forward of $74.23 so we would be able pay out a full scholarship of $2,000 from the endowment this year. Next year, we will use a small amount from the trust but after that we anticipate that the endowment should be close to fully supporting a $2,000 scholarship. The trust balance is roughly $7,000.
Initially, our plan was to use the trust balance to start the second scholarship as soon as the endowment could self-sustain the first scholarship at $2000. However, given the rising cost of tuition ($16K+ per year) we’re being asked to consider giving out one scholarship at a higher value, $3,000 instead of starting the second scholarship.
The consensus was to payout one scholarship of $3,000 and we will continue to add to our principal to reach the $100,000 target needed to payout the $3,000. What an amazing legacy we have left!
UofW Tour and Lunch
The invitation from the Dean of Engineering at the UofW to host a lunch & tour for us was discussed and anyone interested was asked to send an email to Vic/Tom letting us know.
The exact timing of the event has not been established but it is expected to be sometime in June. If you are interested, please send us an email ASAP so we can get some idea of whether to proceed with this invitation from the Dean.
Birthday Wishes to three lovely ladies

Both Sylvia Harris and Helen Laine were celebrating their birthdays on May 15. Jan Harris celebrated her birthday one day earlier on May 14.
The restaurant donated birthday (calorie free) brownies to acknowledge the event. No ages were revealed.

Save the Date - October 16/24
Our next lunch is booked at the Guelph Symposium Cafe and Restaurant for Wednesday, October 16.
Be sure to mark this date in your calendar. We are looking for another great turnout of classmates and ladies.
