an update from Russ Dickinson on the aftermath of the Hurricane in S Carolina.
Hi guys,
Just a reminder of the lunch coming up on Wednesday October 16.
But also, I’m passing on this recent note from Russ Dickinson. As you may know, after retiring from Dow Chemical, Russ & Chris Dickinson moved to McCormick, South Carolina. Normally, hurricanes dissipate quickly when they hit landfall. But Hurricane Helene was different. Russ reports as follows ->

…while not directly in the path of Helene we were well within and on the wrong side of the 400 mile diameter wind field, experiencing wind gusts well above 50-70 mph.

We've been cut-off from the outside world for several days since losing power over last Thursday ... no power, no water, no internet, no gas.  The community pulled together, neighbor helping neighbor and sharing whatever they had.

Chris and I evacuated Sunday to just outside Atlanta to find any available hotel rooms.  We just got back.  Very tense not knowing where you were going to sleep the night or where your next meal was going to come from.  Overall, unlike Augusta or North Carolina we were extremely lucky.  No house damage, only a few trees down around the property, none on the house and no one was injured.  In the early days roads were impassable being blocked by downed trees, powerlines and snapped poles like tooth picks.  The trees were not small, we're talking 70 ft pines.  The entire power infrastructure, both transmission and  distribution were wiped out and will have to be rebuilt.  As we're close to a substation and community power lines are underground, we're of the lucky few to get power back Wednesday evening but others will not have power or water for a week or two more,  some not for months.  Some towns in North Carolina like Ashville and Chimmy Rock were entirely wiped of the map ... nothing left what so ever ... so were thankful for what relatively little damage or discomfort we've suffered.
